FAQs

Q:  What are premises?
A:  Premises are physical locations where livestock are not just raised, but also held or boarded. Examples include ranches, farms, feedlots, renderers, markets, ports of entry, and veterinary clinics and laboratories. All premises with bovine, equine, swine, goats, sheep, camelids, and poultry should be registered.

Q:  Can anyone in my operation register my premises?
A:  Premises may be registered by the landowner, producer using the land, or the person responsible for animal operations.

Q: Why should I register my premises?
A: Premises registration helps cattle producers like you protect your business. The process serves three primary purposes. First, it protects your primary investment – your cattle. It reduces potential hardships caused by disease outbreaks and other animal health events in your community by the timely notification of producers in affected areas. And, premises registration protects your access to markets. In a market-driven economy, the ability to rapidly respond to a disease situation is key to maintaining customer demands and protecting access to domestic and international markets.

Q:  Is it difficult to register?
A:  The process of premises registration is simple and fast. In fact, the whole process takes less than 10 minutes. The only step you must take is to complete the brief registration form.

Q: How much does it cost to register premises?
A: Registration is free!

Q:  Does the premises registration form request operational information?
A:  No! The registration form collects basic information, including your name, address, contact information, and the type of livestock you are raising. It does not ask operational information. In addition, the information you provide remains completely confidential, and is referenced only in the event of an animal health event or disease outbreak.
