New Options for ASA Progress Through Performance Shows Let us help you institute one of these fun and educational events at your next state show!
Many of you have probably either shown in or been involved with the organization of a Progress Through Performance (PTP) show in recent years. The basic difference in these sanctioned “PTP” shows and any other is the incorporation of data for the evaluation of the entries. This data includes such information as EPD’s and actual measurements for average daily gain, frame score, and scrotal circumference. Gathering all of this information can sometimes be a daunting task. In order to simplify the process so that more of these events can be held on a state and regional level we are making you aware of a couple different guideline options for hosting these PTP shows. Take a look below at the various options available and utilize the one that is most suitable for your event staff and exhibitors.
Option A: Original PTP Format All the original guidelines would remain the same. The most current EPD’s would be used in addition to individual measurements taken at the show for weight and hip height.
Specific Guidelines for Option A:
-
All animals must be registered with the American Simmental Association. ASA will provide a pre-programmed spreadsheet with all of the EPDs and calculations for your convenience.
-
All entries should be measured at time of check-in.
-
Cattle identification at check-in must conform to PTP Show Guidelines. Tattoos will be inspected and are subject to ASA staff approval.
-
Frame scores using Beef Improvement Federation Guidelines and most current EPDs on all entries will be collected.
-
Scrotal circumference should be measured on all bulls entered in the bull division.
-
Weights should be taken at check-in to calculate WDA.
-
Data (excluding weights) will be printed in the show program.
-
The frame scores will be reported in the show program on an individual basis.
-
Judges will have access to performance information to use in conjunction with visual appraisal.
-
Decisions to include weight, frame score and scrotal circumference will be made by the state association.
-
Judges for Progress Through Performance State Shows are selected by the state association.
-
All bulls 15 months of age and older should have veterinary proof of semen test/breeding soundness exam and proven as a satisfactory breeder.
-
All bulls 12 months of age or older must be shown with a nose lead or ring.
-
All females 18 months of age or older must be: a) certified pregnant by a licensed non-owner veterinarian, or b) have certification that she has been used in embryo transfer.
-
Rules regarding class size, division breaks, codes of ethics and other general rules will be governed by the host state association. The host state association will also make the decision regarding when the judge is presented with the show program.
-
Entry information (registration numbers, tattoos) must be in the ASA office 14 days prior to show date. Data will be returned to contact person in a spread-sheet format (preferably MS Excel).
-
In addition, all exhibitors must also adhere to the rules set forth by the event coordinators.
Option B: EPD only PTP For this option you would submit the registration numbers for all entries into the ASA home office as usual. We will pull the most current set of EPD’s for each entry and return the data to you in an Excel file format. You would NOT be required to individually weigh or measure the cattle for hip height.

We will pull the most current set of EPD’s for each entry and return the data to you in an Excel file format.
