DNA Requirements
|
American Simmental Association DNA Requirements DONOR DAMS - In order for a dam to qualify for ASA’s donor program, she must have DNA markers on file with us before she is flushed. This requirement applies to Simmental donor dams, as well as donor dams of other breeds. Upon testing, the dam will be confirmed to any parents whose DNA is on file. If any embryo calves are reported out of a dam that has not completed DNA testing, the owner will be charged a penalty fee of $180. AI SIRES – In order for a bull to qualify as an AI sire, he must complete DNA testing before any semen is collected. This requirement applies to Simmental AI sires, as well as AI sires of other breeds. Upon DNA testing, the sire will be confirmed to those parents whose DNA is on file with us. If any AI calves are reported out of a sire that has not met these requirements, the owner will be billed a penalty fee of $180. Karyotype testing is no longer mandatory. EMBRYO CALVES – All embryo calves of which the owner is not the breeder require a DNA test, and must confirm to both parents before they can be registered. This means that DNA markers for both the dam and sire of the calf need to be on file so that parentage can be verified. For embryo calves of which the applicant is the breeder (owns the donor dam), a DNA test is not necessary as long as both the sire and the dam have met DNA/KY requirements. |
