MARTIN FARMS JUNIOR HERD STARTER KIT TO BE AWARDED SEPTEMBER 24

Lyles, Tennessee, May 18, 2011 – Martin Farms, owned and operated by father and son Neil and Christopher Martin, will reward one junior beef enthusiast with the Junior Herd Starter Kit on September 24, 2011 at their annual Open House at the Farm production sale. The program, initiated in 2006, gives the winner the opportunity to select a heifer from the Martin Farms herd. This year’s entries are open to any junior with less than three years experience in a beef project. Finalists are chosen based on a written application and a special project related to the production or promotion of beef cattle. The winner is chosen after finalist interviews that focus primarily on his or her selection of the cattle available from the Open House sale offering.

“We’re continuing to develop the program, and that includes some changes this year,” says Chris Martin. “Our goal is to give the winner more options in selection and more opportunity to be successful with the animal that’s chosen.”

Junior Herd Starter Kit sponsors have supplied feed, semen and show supplies as well as credit vouchers for finalists to help purchase cattle.  Martin Farms began using Simmental genetics in 1971, making this year the 40th anniversary of the program’s affiliation with the breed.
