What is an EPD?
Expected progeny differences (EPD) provide estimates of the genetic value of an animal as a parent. Specifically, differences in EPD between two individuals predict differences in performance, independent of heterosis, between their future offspring when each is mated to animals of the same average genetic merit.
Studies have shown that using EPD is seven to nine times more effective than selecting based on actual phenotypes.
